I met Mikaela Gillespie at the 8th Annual Eastern Panhandle Earth Day Celebration. Mikaela was present to represent Miss Earth and to meet individuals at the event. She wore her Miss Teen West Virginia crown and sash.
Why Miss Earth Is Important To Mikaela
Mikaela explained she belongs to an organization called Miss Earth United States. She competes in the teen division, which consists of competitors ranging in age from 14 to 18 years old. Mikaela talked about her platform for the competition:
The name of my platform is Project 2911. We go to Kenya and buy clothes for the kids because there are a lot of them [who are] homeless, living on the streets. We also get them [the homeless children of Kenya] sponsors to [provide support for the Kenyan children who wish to] go to school. These 10 and 11 year old [kids] are raising younger children, and it’s terrible.
The Miss Earth United States pageant offers scholarship opportunities, modeling and talent contracts. “I am with the Miss Earth organization [because] we focus on environmental causes. It’s not as much of a beauty pageant as it is a scholarship agent,” noted Mikaela
